Pterygium surgery is performed by removing the lesion from the surface of the eye. After the lesion is removed, a small piece of stem cell conjuntiva (white membrane) is taken from under the eyelid and filled into the pterygium area from which it was removed. The surgery is usually performed with local anesthesia.
Pterygium ; It is the growth of the tissue in the white part of the eye, which we call conjunctiva, onto the transparent layer of the eye (the transparent tissue in front of the colored part of the eye), which we call cornea. It is mostly associated with UV exposure in hot climates and chronic ocular surface dryness or inflammation. Once formed, the lesion does not regress and tends to grow as exposure to triggers continues. Its treatment is done surgically.
